Kudakulam nuclear plant's second unit starts operations
The 1000 MW capacity will take the total nuclear power to 6,780 MW.
The second unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Project (KKNPP) with a capacity of 1000 MW became operational today, giving a boost to atomic power generation in the country.
Commercial operation of KKNPP unit 2 is expected to take the total nuclear power to 6,780 MW. The unit was connected to the grid on August 2.
KNPP units 1 and 2, both with a capacity of 1000 MW, have been built with Russian collaboration. Units 3 and 4 are under construction.
The two units are the largest nuclear power generation units in the country.
Unit 2 will be under warranty period of its general designer and the suppliers of equipment from Russia which are represented by ASE Engineering Company, a subsidiary of ROSATOM, Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation.
This means that in case of any malfunction or technical failure related to the obligations of ASE at the Unit 2 of KKNPP, the inconsistencies in the operation of the equipment will be taken care of by the Russian side.
This period of responsibility will last until March 30, 2018, after which the statement on the final acceptance of Unit 2 by the operating entity in India will be signed.
"The Kudankulam NPP project includes a harmonious combination of traditional active and passive safety systems.
The nuclear power plant has implemented a number of systems that fulfill the IAEA post-Fukushima requirements," Andrei Lebedev, Vice President for South Asian projects, ASE Engineering Company said.
