SEATTLE: Noting that cooperative arrangements are needed for the market share of Indian carriers to rise in the traffic in and out of the country, Jet Airways Chairman Naresh Goyal has said his company favoured such cooperation with the newly merged Air India.
"India's market share has been less than 20 per cent of the total traffic in and out of India. All other foreign airlines carry over 80 per cent and it will become more" as India has put in place a liberalised regime, Goyal told Indian media persons here.
"If we don't do something it will go down to ten per cent; the other airlines are expanding."
Goyal is here for the rollout of Boeing's Dreamliner 787 for which Jet Airways has placed an order of ten planes which will start joining the fleet in 2011.
In addition to the Dreamliner, Jet Airways has also placed an order for 10 Boeing 777, the long-range aircraft with two of these planes joining the fleet this month.
The Chairman of Jet outlined an ambitious agenda for his airlines that will see the Boeing 777s put on the North America route starting out of Mumbai first and with a major hub in Brussels, Belgium.
Within a period of one year Jet Airways hopes to increase the frequency that will include the Chennai-Los Angeles sector and a Mumbai-San Fransisco route via China.
"Washington DC is also on my radar" Goyal said. "We would like to see Indian carriers' market share come to be fifty per cent... to do that we don't have to be joining alliances..." he maintained.
"We have agreed that the new merged Air India and JetAirways must cooperate, not just go to alliances. What can't we have an alliance within India," Goyal posed, adding all stand to benefit from such an arrangement.
