From June 3, the electronic way bill (e-way bill) will be rolled out across India. E-Way bill is a document that a person in charge of carrying goods of over Rs 50,000 in value has to carry. The rollout of the e-way bill system, the Ministry noted, will enable trade and industry to be further facilitated insofar as the transport of goods is concerned, thereby eventually paving the way for a nation-wide single e-way bill system.

But what will interest the shopping lovers is that the rolling out of e-way bill will help in delivering your online order faster. Online shoppin lovers can expect a shorter delivery time as e-way bill will eliminate the visits to any tax office or check posts for permits by the transporters.

The various permits required for inter-state and intra-state movement of goods take up as much as 16 per cent of the time taken for an online delivery to reach consumers.

So far, 20 states/Union Territories have made e-way bill mandatory for intra-state movement of goods. These states include -- Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Assam, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana

Till May 13, the e-way bill system for intra-state movement of goods has been rolled out in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh,

Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, Telangana, Tripura, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Puducherry.

The Ministry noted that as on the aforementioned date, more than 4, 15, 00, 000 e-way bills have been successfully generated, including more than one crore e-way bills for intra-state movement of goods.

Touted as an anti-evasion measure, transporters of goods worth over Rs 50,000 would be required to present e-way bill to a GST inspector, if asked. The measure is expected to help boost tax collections by clamping down on trade that currently happens on cash basis.

The GST Council, in March, decided on a staggered roll out of the e-way bill starting with inter-state from April 1 and intra-state from April 15.
