The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has reduced the power tariff for domestic consumers from South Bombay by 6 to 8 per cent while there is negligible rise in power tariff for the residents of North Mumbai. The MERC has decided to rise the power rates for domestic as well as agricultural consumers all across the state other than Mumbai.

The rise in electricity bill is coming in to force from September 1’st, 2018. While addressing a press conference at its Colaba office MERC chairman Anand Kulkarni informed media persons that MERC would be forming a committee to bring in discipline in agricultural consumption of electricity.

Kulkarni informed that the people of South Mumbai would have to pay less on power bills and it is to the tune of 6 to 8 per cent lesser than the existing bills. For South Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking is a Licensee for electricity distribution to the island city area of Mumbai.

He further said that for residents of North Mumbai would have to pay negligible amount more (0 to 1 per cent) than existing bills. In North Mumbai, R Infra which is network by Ambanis and partly by Tata Power used to supply power and now it is gone to Adanis, informed Kulkarni. He said that in Mumbai we can say that there is no power price hike for consumers.

There is rise of 5 to 6 per cent for agricultural pumps and there are 42 lakh farmers who are using pumps for availing water for agriculture. There are 1.88 crore residential meters meaning catering to a population of around 8 to 9 crores and they would have to pay more for power. For these domestic consumers would be paying Rs. 8.95 per unit as against existing Rs. 8.74 per unit. The power utility MSEDCL is responsible for power supply to rest of Maharashtra.

Kulkarni said that there has been demand that commission should take a policy decision on agricultural consumption of electricity. He informed that MERC would be constituting a committee next month to look into these issues. He said that the report of this committee would be sought before the next MERC announcement on power tariff.

He said that despite the fact that petrol and diesel prices as well as coal prices are on a continuous rise, MERC has tried to increase the power rates where it is inevitable. Members of the MERC Mukesh Khullar and I M Bohari were also present with Kulkarni.
