If you are flying Air India, be extra cautious while packing those suitcases. Because from today, June 11, you have to shell out more for extra baggage while flying with the national carrier.

Air India has hiked the charges for extra luggage from Rs 400 to Rs 500. However, these revise changes will not be applicable in Air India's regional arm, Alliance Air. 

"It has been decided to revise the excess baggage rate in the domestic sector to Rs 500 per kg per coupon on all travels commencing on or after June 11 from Rs 400 per kg," the airline said in a circular issued today.

These charges would also attract a 5% GST on baggage for economy class travel and 12%for others, it said. The GST will not be levied in airports across the North East states  besides the Bagdogra airport in West Bengal, the circular said.
