In India there are many entrepreneurs who are running successful businesses after starting from scratch. Hiresha Verma is also one person who has started a business of her own from literally nothing.
In 2013, Hiresha Verma, who after watching the horrors of Kedarnath flash floods on her television, decided to leave her IT career in Delhi so that she can provide aid and relief to the victims of the natural disaster.
“During my interactions with the women of the area, I realised that many of their husbands were now missing, never to return. These women were in a state of despair and had lost all their means of livelihood, support and hope.” Hiresha said in an interview to a portal. Hiresha has done graduation in chemistry and botany, and post-graduation in business management. After the deadly floods, she decided to use her skills and knowledge for the betterment of these women.
Hiresha moved to Dehradun to start mushroom farming as Uttarakhand’s weather was suitable for the crop. She invested Rs 2,000 as an experiment. “After a few successful trials, I underwent training at the Directorate of Mushroom Research in Himachal Pradesh. The same year, I established Hanzen International, a mushroom farming venture on 1.5 acres of land by setting up ten huts with 500 bags in each of them,” she said.
She has helped more than 2000 women in the region gain sustainable livelihood and increase their income by around 30%. She provided training, spawns, and other material free of cost to them. In 2015, Hiresha’s success earned her the Uttarakhand State Award for mushroom farming.
In 2015, she procured a loan of 80 lakhs to set up air-conditioned units and a laboratory to develop spawns on-site and improve the production rate. In 2016, the yield increased to 500 kilos a day. She founded Han Agrocare, a retail brand to sell the produce in different parts of India in 2019.
Besides growing mushrooms, Hiresha's firm has also entered food processing over recent years. Hiresha's company is now earning around Rs 1.5 crore per year.
