Increased availability of bandwidth, less-expensive data plans and fast spreading awareness have helped bridge the digital gap between the urban and rural India. The penetration in rural India is steadily rising -- from 9% in 2015 to 25% in 2018. Among Indian states that are showing the highest growth in new internet user additions, Bihar stands tall, with a growth of 35% over last year, and is closely followed by Odisha, according to a recent report by Kantar IMRB ICUBE.

Interestingly, rural India is driving the digital adoption in the country, with a 35% growth year-on-year in Net users. The number of users in rural India, now estimated at 251 million, is expected to reach 290 million by 2019-end.

It is celebration time for India, currently undergoing a digital revolution. The report says 87% of the total internet user base in India, or 493 million Indians, are regular users, with 293 million active users residing in urban centres and 200 million in rural areas.

What is more exciting is that the Net is now more gender-balanced than ever before. Women today comprise 42% of total Net users. That fact that women are equally active in the digital world, spending as much time as men, is another positive, going forward.
