Trade unions on Tuesday went on a five-day coal industry strike to protest against the disinvestment and restructuring of state-run enterprise Coal India. The strike can affect coal production of up to 1.5 million tonnes a day and may also hit supplies to the power plants which are already grappling with fuel shortages. As per reports, about seven lakh workers are joining the strike. The government has also called a meeting on Tuesday with the representatives of major trade unions like Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh, Indian National Trade Union Congress, Centre for Indian Trade Unions, All India Trade Union Congress and Hind Mazdoor Sabha to sort out the issue.
