A day after the Competition Commission of India (CCI), the fair trade watchdog, imposed a hefty Rs 1,773 crore fine on Coal India for allegedly abusing its dominant position in coal supply, the near monopoly coal miner said it would take ‘’appropriate legal action” against the order. It said it is neither a dominant player nor does it act independently, as stated by the CCI.“The company is seized of the matter and appropriate legal action shall be initiated after the receipt of the copy of the (CCI penalty) order by post,” the state-backed miner said on Wednesday. While details of the planned legal action have been disclosed, a study of the order posted on the CCI’s website showed that Coal India has questioned the very notion of market dominance as perceived by the watchdog while deciding on the order.
