Ahead of the Union Budget 2021-22 session on February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday launched a new mobile app by the name 'Union Budget Mobile App' for hassle-free access to Budget documents by the MPs and the general public using the simplest form of digital convenience.

The Union Budget Mobile App has been developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) under the guidance of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA).

It can be downloaded from the Google Play Store on Android devices and from the Apple App Store on iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad. The App can also be downloaded from the Union Budget Web Portal (www.Indiabudget.Gov.In).

How will the app be beneficial to users: Key features

1. Users will get complete access to 14 Union Budget documents, including the Annual Financial Statement (commonly known as Budget), Demand for Grants (DG), Finance Bill etc as prescribed by the Constitution.

2. The App has a user-friendly interface with embedded features of downloading, printing, search, zoom in and out, bidirectional scrolling, table of contents and external links, etc.

3. Users will get the choice to see the interface in English and Hindi.

4. The bilingual app (English and Hindi) and will be available on both Android and iOS platforms.

5. The Budget documents will be available on the app after the completion of the Budget speech by the Finance Minister on February 1.

Meanwhile, for the first time since independence, the Union Budget 2021, slated to be presented on February 1, is going to be completely paperless. The budget papers will not be printed in the wake of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The decision has been taken as nearly 100 people would be required to stay at the printing press for around a fortnight amid the pandemic fear.

The Central Government has received permission for the same from both houses of parliament.

Earlier, marking the final stage of the Budget making process, a Halwa ceremony was held in North Block on Saturday afternoon.

A customary Halwa ceremony is performed every year before the "lock-in" process of the Budget preparations gets underway.

This normally happens around the middle of January when the exercise to finalise and print budget details starts in the basement of North Block. This year, as the budget is going paperless, the ceremony got delayed since the need for lock-in is not required.
