Amid the ongoing legal battle between Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda Gates, the software giant on Wednesday (June 16) appointed Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella as its new chairman, replacing John Thompson.

Nadella was appointed Microsoft CEO in 2014 and he has played an important role in scaling up Microsoft's business including billion-dollar acquisitions like LinkedIn, Nuance Communications and ZeniMax.

According to Microsoft, Thompson, who was appointed the chairman in place of co-founder Bill Gates in 2014, will serve the company as lead independent director.

Notably, the change in top-level management structure of Microsoft comes just over a year after Bill Gates decided to step down from the board. At that time, Gates had said that he wanted to focus on philanthropic works of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is regarded as one of the biggest charities in the world.

It may be recalled that a probe was conducted by Microsoft in May into Bill Gates' involvement with an employee almost 20 years ago after it was first reported that Gates tried to had an affair with an employee at Microsoft in 2019 while he was still married to Melinda.

Few days ago, CEO Nadella had commented over reports of Bill Gates' 'inappropriate' relationship with a female employee at Microsoft and had asserted that 'the power dynamic in the workplace is not something that can be abused.'

Nadella minced no words in taking an aim at Microsoft founder as he told in an interview to CNBC that the company is 'very different' today to how it was in 2000.

“I feel that we have created an environment that allows us to really drive the everyday improvement in our diversity and inclusion culture, which I think is a super important thing and that’s what I’m focused on,” he was quoted as saying.
