As protests over violence during 200th anniversary of Bhima Koregaon battle in Pune district of Maharashtra spread to different parts of Maharashtra today, airlines announced that they would waive change and cancellation charges including fare difference if any, on all confirmed tickets of those affected by demonstrations on Tuesday.

"Due to unrest in Mumbai, we are waiving off change and cancellation charges, including fare difference if any, on all confirmed tickets for flights to and from Mumbai for travel dated 2nd January, 2018," Jet airways said in a tweet. 

In another tweet, the airline said, "Due to unrest in Aurangabad & Pune, we are waiving off change and cancellation charges, including fare difference if any, on all confirmed tickets for flights into/out of Aurangabad & Pune, respectively, for travel dated 2nd January, 2018.

Similarly, sources said that national carrier Air India has also offered a similar breather for those affected who could not reach airport on time or cancelled their plans anticipating trouble along the way to airport. Other airlines are expected to announce the same soon.

On Monday, a youth died as a group, opposed to the celebrations due to the "British victory" in the Bhima Koregaon battle, clashed with Dalits rallying their way to the battle memorial.  

The violence sparked off protests in various parts of Maharashtra today, including in Mumbai where protesters staged a rail roko in Chembur. The protests disrupted suburbs and local train services on the Harbour Line. 

As groups of youths from Chembur, Vikhroli, Mankhurd and Govandi joined the protest, they blocked roads in several areas of Mumbai, forced shops and and business establishments to shut down.

Mumbai Police said that Section 144 has not been imposed in Chembur or any other parts of eastern suburbs. The police also said that over 100 people had been detained from various locations and they have begun a combing operation.
