Only CNG-run taxis will be allowed to ply in Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR), the Supreme Court said in an announcement on Wednesday, curbing the use of diesel cars in the city to stop pollution. The Court further said gave a deadline of March 31 for all the taxis in NCR to convert to CNG.

The decision comes in line of the apex court's move to ban the registration of any new diesel sports utility vehicles (SUVs) or luxury cars over the capacity of 2000cc till March 31.

The Delhi government had earlier informed the Delhi High Court that it was in favour of the December 3 order that directed the Centre and the Delhi government to look at a plan for only using CNG cabs in the region, said a Business Times report.

It has asked both the Centre and the State government to look at the possibility of setting up a committee, which would be headed by senior officials to work out a plan to ensure CNG cabs run in the NCR area.

The hearing was however adjourned after the Supreme Court was to pass the judgement of diesel cars.

The judgement comes soon after the National Green Tribunal recently sought a ban on the sale of any new diesel cars in the national capital till January 6. The NGT also directed that vehicles older than 10 years should be phased out completely.
