If you are an entrepreneur looking to bring your idea to fruition, head to Ahmedabad. Or, at least that is what a recent survey by consultancies Ernst & Young and Franchise India says. The capital of Gujarat has emerged as the best among 100 Indian cities to do small business in.

The report states that metros, due to their conspicuous factor conditions as well as potential exposure to relatively innovative cosmopolitan interface, are an evident ecosystem for entrepreneurship.

“Ahmedabad, however, performs exceedingly well due to its SME (small & medium enterprise) cluster depth and breadth,” said the report, which added that pharmaceutical, leather footwear, textile machinery parts and health & wellness are feasible businesses in the city.

Gujarat has long been known for its ability to attract huge investments and the favourable business climate it provides.
According to a study conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industry of India (Assocham) earlier this year , between January and December 2009, the state had the highest share in domestic investment plans, amounting to `2,45,352 crore. Orissa came second with `2,00,846 crore.

In the E&Y-Franchise survey, Ahmedabad is followed by Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad and New Delhi. Gujarat has another city, Surat, in the top ten. On the other hand, Jhansi, Patiala and Bareilly are among the worst cities to start a business in, with Jammu and Srinagar taking the lowest two spots on the list.

“Incidentally the worst performers on the list belong to states where either the regulatory or administrative course of action in the past few years has not been quite smooth,” the report noted. It added that this indicated a serious correlation between the policymaker’s strategic vision and long-term sustainability of innovation at the grassroots level and hence the growth of SMEs.
SMEs contribute 70% to its GDP and 45% to its exports.
