Adani Power to be largest private producer by April

After synchronising the 660 mw power plant at Mundra, Adani Power has become India’s third largest private power generation company with a total capacity of 1,980 mw.

By commissioning another 1,320 mw power plant at the same place, Adani will become the country’s largest private power company by April 2011.

“We have made a record by synchronising the power plant within 36 months from the inception. This is the fastest implementation ever by any power developer in the country. The journey does not stop here. We are increasing our capacity by adding two projects of 660 mw each, totalling 1,320 mw, by April 2011. At that time, we will become the country’s largest power generating company,” Gautam Adani, chairman of Adani Group, told DNA.

With the synchronisation of new power plants, Adani Power’s coal-fired thermal generation capacity will increase to 3,300 mw.
Currently, Adani Power is the third-largest private power generating company in the company with 1,980 mw capacity,  while Tata Power is the largest with 3,000 mw followed by Lanco Infra with 2082 mw.

“The total capacity of 4,620 mw at Mundra will make it the largest single location thermal power plant in the country and the fifth largest in the world. It will be completed by March 2012 ahead of schedule,” said Adani.

Apart from this, the company is also putting up power plants in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. “The plants outside Gujarat will have a capacity of around 6,000 mw. All these projects are under different stages of construction. But we are expecting it to be commissioned before 2015,” he said.

Adani Power plans to implement various projects totalling 16,500 mw and complete those by 2015.

“We are confident our target to create a capacity of 20,000 mw by 2020 will be achieved much before that date,” he said.

Talking about sourcing coal, Adani said the company already has the resources through mines in Australia. “We will import coal from Down Under as well as from Indonesia. We also want to start a gas-based power plant in Gujarat, but at a later stage. For this, we are coming up with an liquefied natural gas terminal at Mundra Port,” he said.
