Extending yesterday's gain, the BSE benchmark Sensex rose over 58 points in early trade today on selective buying by funds amid a mixed trend on other Asian bourses.

The 30-share index, which had gained 19.25 points in the previous session, rose further by 58.28 points, or 0.29%, to 19,978.49 with stocks of realty, capital goods and banking sectors moving up. The National Stock Exchange index Nifty also gained 14.55 points, or 0.25%, to 5,907.00.

Brokers said buying by funds in select stocks, having strong fundamentals amid a mixed trend in other Asian bourses, influenced the trading sentiment here. They said, however, tomorrow's monthly expiry in the derivatives segment forced participants to keep their commitments restricted.

In Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rose by 0.32%, while Japan's Nikkei shed 0.39% in early trade. The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.43% lower in yesterday's trade on mixed economic data.
