After facing a lot of hurdles and difficulties, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus Padmaavat finally found a release on Janaury 25. Ever since the team of the film began shooting, several fringe groups, including the Rajput Karni Sena have been protesting against the release of the film, alleging that the SLB film distorts history and presents the Rajputs in a bad light.
Though, the film has been raking in the moolah at the box office ever since the paid previews began, and has entered the coveted Rs 100 crore club in just about four days by earning a total of Rs 114 crore till now, it could have earned much more than that. Despite gathering over Rs 100 crore in its first weekend, the film has lost out on business amounting to a whopping Rs 37 crore and this has happened because a few states did not screen the film due to violent protests in states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and parts of Goa.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to his Twitter account to share the information. He wrote, "Protests... Disturbances... No screening in few states... Yet, #Padmaavat does EXCELLENT biz in its extended weekend... The film lost out on substantial biz [approx ₹ 35 cr / ₹ 37 cr], but the SUPERB trending in other circuits helped put up a MAJESTIC total..."

Padmaavat stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in the leads. It's based on a poem of the same name by a Sufi poet Malik Muhammed Jayasi and is largely considered to be a work of fiction.
