You truly are the 'Queen of Melody': Bollywood wishes Lata Mangeshkar on her 89th birthday

Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar Friday turned 89 and on Twitter there was an outpouring of love and heartfelt messages for the voice which has regaled the audiences for decades.

Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar Friday turned 89 and on Twitter there was an outpouring of love and heartfelt messages for the voice which has regaled the audiences for decades.

Her extensive experience and work in the industry, ranging from 1942 to 2015, has earned her many sobriquets, such as Queen of Melody and the Nightingale of India.
She started her career at the age of 13 in 1942 and has till now sung over 25, 000 songs, in different languages.

Her songs such as "Dil vil pyar vyar", "Bindiya chamkegi", "Ajeeb dastan hai ye" "Tune o rangeele kaisa jaadu kiya", "Mere haathon mein", "Aaja shaam hone aayi", "Dil deewana bin sajna ke" and "Kitne ajeeb rishte hai yaha pe", among others still resonate with the people.

She is the only singer to be awarded the highest civilian honour -- the Bharat Ratna. Among the other honours she received are Dadasaheb Phalke Award, France's highest civilian award (Officer of the Legion of Honour), three National Awards and several Filmfare awards.

Her sister Asha Bhosle wrote on Twitter, "Birthday greetings to the one and only Lata Didi."

Actors Anil Kapoor and Raveena Tandon also wished the veteran singer on the occasion.

"Happy Birthday, @mangeshkarlata ji! Thank you for giving us a song for every mood and a voice that will echo in our hearts forever...Wishing you lots of love, health and happiness!" Kapoor said.

"Dil toh paagal hai, dil deewana hai....for your beautiful voice! You truly are the 'Queen of Melody' @mangeshkarlata Ji. Happy Birthday! I wish you good health & happiness," Madhuri Dixit-Nene said.

Veteran ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas extended his wishes to Mangeshkar and prayed for her long life.

"Happy birthday respected Bharat Ratna Lata ji wish you good health and a long life filled with happiness thank you for the music. Blessed to be born in your era @mangeshkarlata" he wrote.

Filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra posted, "A very happy birthday to the legend Lata Mangeshkar. Having your name on the album of my film was no short of a dream come true for me. Thank you for giving us 'Luka Chupi'."

"Many happy returns of the day to the Nightingale of India and our Maa Saraswati... Lata Mangeshkar didi Wish you a happy and a healthy life. Goddess of music," wrote Madhur Bhandarkar.
