Vijay Varma, who rose to fame with Gully Boy, will be seen next in Hurdang, in which he plays a college hustler deeply involved in politics. The film is based on the Mandal Commision of the ’90s. Student politics not being as nuanced then, Vijay didn’t have much reference material to prep for the role. Also, he wanted a little more context to enhance his character, so, he marked out the notable leaders of Mandal Commission in Allahabad University, went there and interacted with them.

Says Vijay, “To re-imagine the character I am playing, it was a must to meet the leaders in person. That’s because the politics of it is still relevant and they could give me more information about the same. That period had its own set of social discrepancies, which gave rise to the politics that time. Meeting them one by one helped me portray the character better.”
