The comedy starring Manoj Bajpayee, Diljit Dosanjh, and Fatima Sana Shaikh hit the big screens across India on November 15.
As theatres reopened for the first time since March, Diljit Dosanjh, Fatima Sana Sheikh, and Manoj Bajpayee Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari were released on Sunday to limited response.
According to Box Office India, the hope was a 3 crore net type of number which the film would have got roughly if it had a normal non-holiday release pre-Covid-19 pandemic.
The film got a huge release in the metros with multiplexes going to 14 and 16 shows but many cinemas continue to remain shut due to rental issues over the non-opening in the Covid-19 period. The audience count in the shows screened was in the 20-25 range in the afternoon and evenings on average so people did come out to watch but the industry had hoped for a better response to give confidence for future releases to come over the next month or so.
The North India numbers (especially NCR) are a struggle considering the strong release in these parts.
According to the DNA Review of the film, Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari is a family entertainer. "Manoj Bajpayee is killing it in his introduction as a neighbourhood 'maushi', who is friendly with the other ladies and discusses her husband with them. The actor has adopted many roles as the detective in the film and he is flawless 90% of the time."
"Go watch it in theatres and take your family along. You won't be disappointed. Also, wait for the credit scenes, for they will keep you longing for more," it read.
The film, set in Mumbai of the nineties, is directed by Abhishek Sharma, who has earlier handled the genre in films such as Tere Bin Laden, Tere Bin Laden: Dead And Alive, The Shaukeens, and The Zoya Factor.
