Alia Bhatt is not only the numero uno actress in Bollywood today but when it comes to make-up also, she is always on point. Last month at an awards function, the 26-year-old was the cynosure of all eyes with her dewy skin, loose waves and coral lips. While promoting her recently-released film Kalank, the powerhouse performer was seen sporting a fresh face and a wide range of hair styles right from tight buns to half-up ponytails.

According to celebrity make-up experts, Alia has nailed the summer make-up look in more ways than one.
After Hrs speaks to two artists to find out how you can ace them too.

Dewy skin

Make-up expert Clint Fernandes says dewy skin, which means healthy-looking, soft and moisturised complexion, is a huge trend this summer. To achieve this, Clint suggests, “Use a good moisturiser. A gel moisturiser is ideal for this humid weather.  Follow it up with a sunscreen and then apply a BB or a CC cream. Most skin tones even out with these products. Keep a compact handy in order to  matte out the T-zone or the area under the eyes.” To add that luminous touch, use a highlighter at the right places. However, he has a word of caution. “One has to be careful while opting for highlighter. If you overdo it, then it will give you an oily finish and it may seem as if your face is sweating. So, apply it only on the cheekbones, bridge of the nose, bow of the lips and décolletage.”

Neon colours

Fluorescent shades of make-up are also in vogue. If you are scared of using neon shades, then opt for a lime green kajal or kohl under the eyes or just a hint of an eye shadow on the inner corner of the eyes to add that pop of colour to your look. Clint says, “Even if you are using a little bit of fluoro blush for the evening, it perks up the cheeks quite well and looks good under the UV light also.” If you think neon shades are restricted to green, blue and yellow, then you are wrong.

“Pantone shade of 2019 — living coral — works well with Indian skin tone. Most Indian women are dusky. So, the coral colour looks really good on the cheeks and lips,” advises Clint.

Simple eye make-up

Celebrity make-up artist Elton J Fernandez says simple eye make-up is ideal for this sweltering heat. “If you are an urban woman who likes to express herself, then apply bright colour near the eyes, close to the lash line as it’s quick and effortless.”

For the more dramatic look, he suggests a cat eye. “A winged eye liner with a flick on the outside and thinner on the inner corner of the eyes is always perfect.”

Glossy lips

This 90s trend is back with a bang. Several actresses have been spotted wearing gloss on their lips. It not only adds an instant shine to your entire look but also lends a fresh yet glamorous appeal. Clint says, “However, you have to be very careful while using it because if you overdo it, then it will drip and melt, more so because of the heat right now. So, dab a little bit on the centre of the lips, and let your body heat spread it.”

He also has a piece of advice for women with pigmented lips as the gloss will not reflect well on them. “Start off by applying a long stay matte flesh tone (you want your lips to be of that colour). Let that set completely, then use a gloss of any colour on top of it. If you use translucent gloss directly on dark pigmented lips, then it tends to look a little dirty.”

Flushed cheeks and lips

Elton suggests that a lip and cheek stain is ideal for this weather as it acts as a multi-purpose product and adds just the right amount of colour to your look. “It works fantastically because you can keep touching up. It has a bit of raw romance to it. It serves as an eye shadow, blush and lipstick all at once.” As far as colours are concerned, keeping the tropical climate in mind he advises that one should opt for “potent pinks, corals, bold reds and bright oranges. We should experiment with textures too. That’s why I like the lip and cheek stain as it has a fruity natural tint and blend,” he adds.

Hair affair

Elton states that with a little bit of imagination, you can try out different styles. He mentions, “After you shampoo your hair, your mane has a natural texture. Try to enhance that and play with it. If you have curls then  use a curl enhancing cream so that your mane is hydrated. So on day one, you can let it loose. On day two, it feels good because it has a little bit of dirt and texture in it, on day three you can tie a low ponytail. Consequently, you can tie a high ponytail or a tight bun.”

Clint adds, “Straight hair and coloured tresses are big right now. Scrunched up buns and ponytails are also in vogue. It works well for our Indian hair texture too, but you need to do it with appropriate products. A braided up do or a tied up hairdo are also good for this weather.”
