The Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon film opened to Rs 8.01 crore while Sushant Singh Rajput's 'Sonchiriya' collected Rs 1.2 cr
This Friday, Kriti Sanon locked horns at the box office with her rumoured ex-boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput. Despite 'Luka Chuppi' and 'Sonchiriya' belonging to vastly different genres, the clash ended up affecting the latter's numbers.
Kriti and Kartik Aaryan's romantic drama earned Rs 8.1 crore on its opening day while Sushant's dacoit drama could barely manage to collect Rs 1.5 crore. Ironically, 'Sonchiriya' received better reviews from the critics than 'Luka Chuppi'.
It should also be noted that while 'Luka Chuppi' released on more than 2100 screens in India and 407 screens overseas, 'Sonchiriya' released only on 720 screens in India and 220 screens abroad.
According to film trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Sonchiriya's slow-paced performance at the box office could be attributed to the film's limited screens and the fact that it "caters to a niche audience."
'Total Dhamaal', which is now in its second week, may also have impacted the box office performance of Sushant's film.
He shared the figures on Twitter on Saturday. “#SonChiriya opens to low numbers, since the screen count [720 screens]/shows are limited and also because it caters to a niche audience... Biz on Day 2 and 3 crucial... Fri Rs 1.20 cr. India biz,” he wrote.
Sharing Luka Chuppi's numbers, he wrote, “#LukaChuppi has superb Day 1... Springs a big, big surprise... Opens bigger than #Raazi [₹ 7.53 cr], #Stree [Rs 6.83 cr] and #BadhaaiHo [Rs 7.29 cr]... Strong word of mouth should ensure impressive growth on Day 2 and 3... Fri Rs 8.01 cr. India biz.”

Kartik and Kriti are at the top of their game, coming off the success of 'Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety' and 'Bareilly Ki Barfi', respectively. 'Luka Chuppi' emerged as the biggest opener of Kartik's career.
Luka Chuppi is the story of a live-in couple staying together under the guise of a marriage. The film is based in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. It also boasts of a few popular re-created numbers such as Coca Cola, Poster Lagwa Do and Tu Laung Main Elaaichi.
Produced by Dinesh Vijan, the movie is expected to repeat the success of the producer’s past comedies Stree and Hindi Medium.
'Sonchiriya' on the other hand is a dacoit drama that boasts of a stellar cast including Manoj Bajpayee, Ashutosh Rana, Bhumi Pednekar and Ranvir Shorey among others.
