Lara Dutta says husband Mahesh Bhupathi was ‘shocked’ seeing her 'BellBottom' look

Lara Dutta, who got a significant makeover for the spying thriller ‘BellBottom,’ says her husband Mahesh Bhupathi was ‘shocked’ when he saw her new look.

In the film, she plays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, with Akshay Kumar, Vaani Kapoor, and Huma Qureshi. Lara had to go through a lengthy make-up and prosthetics process. In the trailer for 'BellBottom,' she appeared to be unrecognisable.

In an interview with Zoom, Lara opened up about Mahesh’s reaction. She said, “My husband was shocked. He probably felt very unsettled with the look. He was like I don’t want to hug you. You don’t really look like yourself.”

She additionally also revealed how her daughter Saira reacted. “She was intrigued. She saw it come alive in front of her... She came in and she saw whole silicon on my face and said, ‘Mum they are going to kill you, you can’t breathe.’ She was so worried. Ya, but having said that, she was also very intrigued and was like, ‘Can I touch the nose, the eyebrows? Can I do this, that?’

Speaking to a leading daily, Lara said, “The idea was to capture everything correctly and make sure we are as close to the resemblance of Mrs Gandhi as possible. At the end of the day, either I play Indira Gandhi as Lara Dutta or we make Lara Dutta a close resemblance to Indira Gandhi,”.

For the unversed, 'Bell Bottom,' a spy thriller based on the early 1980s airline hijackings that rocked India. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who was in power at the time, will be played by Lara. In the film, Vaani will play Akshay's wife.

The film stars Akshay Kumar, Vaani Kapoor, Lara Dutta, and Huma Qureshi and is directed by Ranjit M Tewari. Producers include Vashu Bhagnani, Jackky Bhagnani, Deepshikha Deshmukh, Monisha Advani, Madhu Bhojwani, and Nikkhil Advani. It will be released on August 19th, 2021.
