'Kesari' Box Office Collection: Akshay Kumar's film mints Rs 78.07 cr over weekend, effect of IPL 2019 showing up

Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra starrer Kesari is having a great run at the box office. The film recorded the biggest opening of 2019, by minting Rs 21.06 crore on the release day. The film was a non-Friday release as it hit the screens on Thursday (March 21, 2019), on the occasion of Holi. Despite having a low occupancy in the morning shows, the movie picked up by 2 pm on the opening and created a new record of the year.

As per reports by trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Kesari, which crossed Rs 50 crore mark on Saturday has made more than Rs 75 crore on its first weekend. Taran tweeted, "#Kesari puts up an impressive total... North circuits are superb... While the 4-day total is good, the biz on Sat and Sun should’ve been higher, since the word of mouth is excellent... Thu 21.06 cr, Fri 16.75 cr, Sat 18.75 cr, Sun 21.51 cr. Total: ₹ 78.07 cr. India biz."

He also said that IPL might have slightly affected Kesari's box office. Taran wrote, "Section of the industry feels #IPL2019 curtailed the growth of #Kesari on Sat [evening] and Sun... Two days that could’ve made a biggg difference to the *extended* weekend total... Weekdays pivotal... Strong numbers and solid trending [Mon-Thu] are a must."

Kesari is based on the historic Battle of Saragarhi fought between 21 Sikhs and 10,000 invaders in the year 1897. The film is directed by Anurag Singh and co-produced by Karan Johar.
