After actress Kangana Ranaut failed to appear before the Andheri Magistrate court last week in connection with a criminal defamation complaint filed against her by lyricist Javed Akhtar, the next date for the hearing was fixed on Monday (September 20). Ranaut appeared before the metropolitan magistrate's court on Monday for the first time since summons was issued to her in February this year.

Kangana’s lawyer Rizwan Siddique has filed an application to transfer the case from the Andheri court and said, “This court has many times said that it will issue a warrant against her so Kangana is not comfortable this court hearing her matter.”

Stating that Kangana has “lost faith in this court”, Rizwan added, “Why is she required in a bailable and compoundable and non-cognisable offence, but this court has said on multiple occasions that a warrant will be issued against her, so she is not comfortable with this court.”

Siddique also said that witnesses including Kangana’s sister Rangoli haven’t been examined in the case yet. Meanwhile, Javed Akhtar’s lawyer Jay Bharadwaj said that every time there's a bizarre excuse by the accused (Kangana) to not to appear in front of the court.

The last hearing in the case was on September 14 when Kangana had failed to appear before the court and moved an application seeking exemption from personal appearance on medical grounds. Her lawyer submitted in the court a medical report of Kangana and said that she is showing symptoms of Covid-19. In the last 15 days, she has travelled a lot due to her movie promotions and meeting a lot of people, stated Siddique.

Bharadwaj had claimed that the actor was resorting to delaying tactics in the defamation case filed against her by Akhtar. "It is nothing but a plea to delay the proceedings of the court. There have been seven to eight dates in the matter and we have pointed out to the court that she has not appeared on any of the dates,” he said.

In the last hearing, Jay had moved an application for issuance of a non-bailable warrant against Kangana, which had been kept pending for today’s hearing." If the accused doesn’t appear then we are going to press it," he stated while talking about the plea moved by him for a non-bailable warrant against Kangana.

Javed Akhtar had filed the complaint in November last year, claiming Kangana had made defamatory statements against him in a television interview, which allegedly damaged his reputation.

Akhtar in his complaint claimed that Ranaut dragged his name during an interview while referring to a 'coterie' existing in Bollywood, following actor Sushant Singh Rajput death in June last year.
