Jim Sarbh’s debut Bengali film goes to IFFM

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2018 has announced its list of regional films, with critically-acclaimed movies selected for screening. From Bengal, Aditya Vikram Sengupta’s Jonaki has been chosen. Revolving around an 80-year-old woman who reminisces about those closest to her as she searches for love in a world she is about to leave behind, the film stars the late veteran Bengali actress Lolita Chatterjee, with Jim Sarbh playing her lover. It also marks the Padmaavat actor’s debut in Bengali cinema. Interestingly, Jim doesn’t have any lines in Jonaki. He says, “For me, it wasn’t really a Bengali movie. It was more a silent experimental dreamscape film because I didn’t have any lines. I guess I don’t really think of cinema in terms of their regional location, it is more about the content and quality.”

Incidentally, even Padmaavat, in which Jim played Malik Kafur will be screened at the festival. Says the actor, “I used to live in Sydney when I was a kid, so I am quite excited that two films that I feature in are screening at the festival. I hope I get a chance to go.” The festival is being held from August 18-22.
