Sushmita Sen says it's more shocking that we didn't listen to these stories for so long...
Sushmita Sen is the latest celebrity to come out in support of the ongoing #MeToo movement in the country. With so many women coming out on social media and naming and shaming their predators, sharing their stories of sexual harassment and more, the #MeToo movement only seems to be strenghening with every passing day. However, the former Miss Universe feels it's not something that we haven't been aware of. What she finds more shocking is the fact that these stories haven't been heard before.
Sushmita Sen walked the ramp for ace designer Neeta Lulla on Sunday at a recently concluded fashion show and was interacting with the media post the event. When quizzed about the shocking revealtions in the light of #MeToo in India, the actress said, "It is going to be shocking every single time, but we are also not ignorant people. It’s not like we didn’t know these things were happening in India and in the world. I think what is more shocking that we did not listen to it for so long and that we didn’t do anything about it. This is the start, and you have to listen, believe and let justice prevail." reports IANS.
When asked if this is the right time for this movement, the actress was quoted as saying by the agency, "The right moment was when women were born. It is not today or tomorrow. But even if we are delayed, I am still very proud of everyone.And there is no gender bias for women alone. I think the fact that our society and our people are all standing up to express themselves and have a voice, it is so powerful. The fact that I got to see this in my lifetime, makes me very proud as a woman and a human being for my country”.
Those who've come in late, it all began with Tanushree Dutta reiterating her allegations on Nana Patekar on the sets of Horn OK Pleassss. The Aashiq Banaya Aapne actress accused Nana Patekar of sexually harassing her on the sets of the film about a decade back, while she was there to shoot for an item number. Since then, a number of women have shared their stories of being harassed by men. Some of the names that have cropped up from the tinsel town include the likes of Sajid Khan, Alok Nath, Subhash Ghai, Rajat Kapoor, Kailash Kher among others.
