Kunal Pandit believes in giving his listeners a variety of tracks that are different in genres and styles. Which is why his third single Tu Yahi Toh Chahe is musically more uptempo than his earlier ones, Hona Hi Na Tha and Tu Dil Ke Raahein. “I gave this song a groovy Retro and R&B mix,” he tells us.

Kunal’s second non-film track came a year after his debut because he took a break to participate in Indian Idol 10. In spite of having two big songs, Albela Sajan Aayo Ri (Bajirao, 2015) and Ek Dil Ek Jaan (Padmaavat, 2018), he took part in the reality show because being recognised by people was always on his mind. “You need a platform to build an audience and reality shows are the best to reach the maximum listeners all over in India and globally,” he reasons. As soon as his stint with the show ended in January this year, he released his second single Tu Dil ki Raahein

Initially, Kunal didn’t plan to shoot a video for Tu Yahi Toh Chahe, though he also wanted to track the listeners’ response. “A few days after releasing the song, my crew and I thought making a video. I’m glad to see the response. It’s a huge success if your songs organically reach to your listeners in and across the nations,” he avers.

All the three singles that he has released have been rather heartwrenching. When asked why that’s the case, he says, “All of us go through multiple emotional rushes in our day-to-day life. It can be raw and unfiltered emotion or overwhelming and or filtered, depending on the impact someone had made on your life. Whether I am happy, stressed, sad, emotionally drained or in a lazy mood, I focus on channelling the energy and emotions as a sharpening tool to enhance my songs. I write about every emotion from experience,” he divulges, and adds, “It can only come through naturally when you sink in it. I will never shy away from admitting that everything I have written is based on my past relationships that didn’t work out.”

Though his songs are more modern musically, he pulled off the classical tracks in Padmaavat and Bajirao Mastani with aplomb. But, he tells us that they were not extremely challenging to render. “I have been learning classical and semi-classical music from my father Pradeep Pandit since childhood. I feel lucky to be born into a musical family. So, these songs are my genre,” says Kunal. The singer believes in engaging with his listeners through his music. His next releases on his YouTube are Bombay, Aawara and Parchhai. “I want to keep releasing singles and growing as a musician,” he concludes.
