Ali Fazal walked away with accolades for his turn as Guddu Pandit in the web series Mirzapur. Now, the trailer of Prassthanam has given a sense of déjà vu with its treatment and subject. But Ali says in its defence, “The film’s action may be similar but it is completely different from Mirzapur. I play a highly-educated guy who has studied abroad and comes back to help his father.” While the Fukrey Returns actor plays Sanjay Dutt’s son in his latest outing, he has bagged another biggie — Death on the Nile with Gal Gadot. Ali talks to us about working with the Munnabhai MBBS actor, his date diary being choc-a-bloc and why he and Richa Chadha are not in a rush to tie the knot.

POLITICAL DRAMA WITH A DIFFERENCE

Even though Prassthanam has a political backdrop, Ali emphasises that the film is unlike others in the genre. He explains, “I play the role of Sanjay baba’s son, who is sorted, handles everything on his own and is idealistic enough to take his father’s place. He follows his dad religiously. So, it’s also a family drama, which makes it different from other political films.”

WORKING WITH SANJAY

Apart from having an important role in the film, Ali tells us that he had a blast on the set, working with Sanjay. “I’ve been a big fan of his since a long time,” he smiles, adding, “I didn’t think Baba would be so chilled out!” But it wasn’t only fun and games. The senior actor helped Ali with his scenes as well. “If I ever got nervous, he always said, ‘Ali, don’t get confused. Apna time leke shot de, bas tension matt le’. Even while doing emotional scenes, he always asked me to do it with absolute intensity,” Ali states.

PROJECTS GALORE

Even as Prassthanam is up for release, Ali has a bagful of movies to look forward to. “I had to quickly wrap up Mirzapur season 2 in Varanasi because I’ve signed two Hollywood projects — the adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile and a biopic. That apart, I have a web movie House Arrest directed by Shashanka Ghosh releasing in November. I am also doing Bhoot Police with Saif Ali Khan and Fatima Sana Shaikh, which is on hold as I don’t have dates for the same,” says Ali. “Isse zyaada kaam nahi kar sakta ek time pe. I will be unable to give time to myself,” he reasons. About the sophomore season of Mirzapur, he divulges that the filming has almost wrapped up and it will release early next year. “Audiences will see Guddu bhaiyya of next level in this one,” he tells us.

WEB SPACE MORE CHALLENGING

Having worked in Bollywood, Hollywood as well as the web, Ali finds the digital platform more difficult. “It’s like shooting three films back to back. There is a lot more commitment and it’s quite time-consuming. Isi wajah se main bore ho jaata hoon. But eventually, it’s all worth it,” he explains.

WEDDING NOT ON CARDS

Ali is known to be in a relationship with his Fukrey Returns co-star Richa Chadha but he states they don’t discuss work with each other. “Sometimes, if I need advice for doing a scene or a sequence, I look up to her, as I think she will tell me something new; that’s it,” he elaborates. The Masaan actress also said in an interview that they don’t get enough time to interact with each other or think of marriage. Ali is reluctant to talk about his wedding, though, he says, “It’s not like I don’t want to get married. Now is not the right time to discuss shaadi and all. We both are extremely busy with back-to-back film shoots,” he signs off.
