It might be difficult for Star Wars fans to imagine the movie franchise without Mark Hamill playing the now iconic role of Luke Skywalker. However, the Hollywood actor, who made his debut with the series’ first film, Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope in 1977, believes it was his nonchalant attitude that helped him bag the role. When we recently caught up with the actor, who reprises his role in the upcoming movie, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, he revealed to us how this thought was reaffirmed when he watched his audition tapes.

He recalled, “A couple of years ago, I was asked to sign a release to let my screen test be made public. I didn’t really watch the movies, so I didn’t care and said, ‘Sure’.” One day, while the makers were filming the franchise’s seventh instalment (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Mark happened to be home alone watching the computer. “I think I was watching Back to the Future and the computer suggested ‘screen test for Star Wars’. I was like, ‘Ooh, do I have the nerve, all these years later?’ I thought if I don’t do it now, I won’t do it ever. So I clicked on it,” he said. Mark ended up watching the screen tests of actors Robby Benson, Kurt Russell and William Katt before he watched his own.

Looking back, Mark feels that each of these actors would have made for a great Luke. “Kurt was more worldly, he almost could play Han Solo (the role that was later immortalised by Harrison Ford). William had great goldilocks and was visually more arresting. Robbie was very endearing like a little boy. So, I don’t know how they chose me, maybe they went ‘Eenie meenie miney mo’,” he quipped. On a more serious note, the actor thinks that he was cast because he was trying to be as minimalist as possible. “Sometimes, your desire to get that part makes you push too hard and there’s a neediness that comes through which is unappealing. In my audition, it looked like I didn’t care. It’s like the girl who won’t date you in high school and you want her even more!” he laughed. Glad they got you, Mr Hamill!
