'Gulabo Sitabo' star Farrukh Jaffar dies at 89

The late actress Farrukh Jafar was one of the first radio announcers of Vividh Bharti Lucknow in the year 1963.

Veteran actress Farrukh Jaffar, who was recently seen in the film 'Gulabo Sitabo', died at the age of 89 in Lucknow on Friday. Farrukh's elder daughter Mehru Jaffar confirmed that her mother was ill. She was admitted to Sahara Hospital on October 4 due to breathlessness. 

According to a news agency, Mehru said, "She was admitted to the hospital on October 4 due to breathlessness. She was not well. Her lungs were unable to take the oxygen that had been given to her. She passed away in the evening at around 6 pm."

Farrukh’s grandson Shaaz Ahmad took to Twitter to share the news of her demise. He tweeted, "My grandmother and wife of Freedom fighter, Ex MLC Mr S.M.Jaffar and Veteran Actress Mrs Farrukh Jaffar passed away today at 7 pm in Lucknow."

Her last rite was performed today morning. 

The late actress Farrukh Jaffar was one of the first radio announcers of Vividh Bharti Lucknow in the year 1963. She began her on-screen journey with the 1981 classic ‘Umrao Jaan’, in which she portrayed Rekha's mother.

Farrukh had appeared on TV shows also. In 2004, she worked in Shah Rukh Khan’s movie 'Swades'. She was praised for playing the role of a bidi-smoking cantankerous mother-in-law in 'Peepli Live'. She had also performed in the movies 'Sultan' and 'Photograph'. 

Her character in Amitabh Bachchan's 'Gulabo Sitabo' mesmerized everyone. She played the character of the fiesty Fatima Begum, who was the wife of megastar Amitabh Bachchan. The movie was directed by Shoojit Sircar.
 
Screenwriter Juhi Chaturvedi, who wrote 'Gulabo Sitabo?', took to Instagram to pay tribute to Jaffar. He wrote, "Begum is gone Farrukh ji, there was no one, and there will be no one like you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing us to connect with you. Please stay safe in the other world of Allah. RIP #FarrukhJaffar #Begum #FattoBi #FatimaBegum #GulaboSitabo.” He also shared a picture of the actress.

For the unversed, the actress was married to journalist-politician Syed Muhammad Jaffar. She is survived by her daughters, Mehru and Shaheen.
