Today, the team of Student Of The Year 2 (SOTY2) will give us their version of the legendary Kishore Kumar’s pacy track, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani (Jawani Diwani, 1972). This one has been recreated by Vishal-Shekhar. The former (Vishal Dadlani) has rendered the additional lyrics too, even though Kishoreda’s original vocals have been retained.
According to director Punit Malhotra, the number fit in organically in the romantic drama, which stars Tiger Shroff, Aditya Seal and marks the big-screen debut of Ananya Panday as well as Tara Sutaria. He says, “We had this situation, of a dance competition and were wondering what kind of track to pick for it. The first Student Of The Year (2012) had Disco Deewane (a recreated version of Nazia and Zoheb Hassan’s 1981 chartbuster). So, we decided to take on an old song. Also, the situation in this film is similar. That’s why we thought it was best to keep the good luck going.”
Punit adds that the song, which was picturised on Randhir Kapoor and Jaya Bhaduri (now Bachchan), is one of his and producer Karan Johar’s all-time favourite tracks. “It was on our radar. So, we didn’t feel the need to look for another number. It’s a big number and it does complete justice. Even the audio is so catchy that it instantly gets you tapping your feet. Moreover, this dance competition comes at a crucial point in the storyline.”
Punit is optimistic about the song’s popularity. “We’ve used a bit of it in the trailer and the response has been quite encouraging.” Remo D’souza choreographed the track, which features Tiger, Ananya, Tara, Aditya and a host of dancers, on three sets over three days. “The way Tiger dances is amazing. Ananya, Tara and Aditya too have performed well, making it a good competition number. We had a blast shooting the song, it’s young, fresh and looks spectacular.”
Student Of The Year 2, presented by Fox Star Studios and produced by Hiroo Yash Johar, Karan Johar & Apoorva Mehta, releases on May 10.
