Gadar 2 vs Pathaan vs Baahubali 2: How Sunny Deol film beat Shah Rukh Khan, Prabhas’ blockbusters at box office

Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 is continuing its record-breaking run at the box office. The film recorded one of the highest opening weekends for any Hindi film and backed that up with a very strong week due to the Independence Day holiday. But what is really promising for the Anil Sharma film is how it has managed to perform in its second weekend, pipping several blockbusters of the past and raising hopes that it can beat Pathaan and Baahubali 2 in terms of overall collection.

Gadar 2 box office collection in first week

Gadar 2 opened to a strong Rs 40 crore on release day and managed Rs 284 crore net in India in its first week. This included an unusually high Rs 55 crore on its first Tuesday, which was a national holiday on account of Independence Day. By this point, Pathaan was ahead of Gadar 2, having earned Rs 351 crore (Hindi only) in its extended nine-day opening week. The Hindi version of Baahubali The Conclusion had earned Rs 247 crore in its first week back in 2017. This meant that Gadar 2 managed to outearn Baahubali 2 and was only behind Pathaan, which had two extra days to earn.

How Gadar 2 surpassed Pathaan and Baahubali 2

But it is the second weekend where Gadar 2 has shown it has the legs to sustain. The film has earned an astonishing Rs 90 crore in its second weekend, including a very strong Rs 38.90 crore on its second Sunday. This is higher than the Rs 80-crore second weekend for Baahubali 2 (Hindi) and way higher than Pathaan’s Rs 66-crore second weekend. This means Gadar 2 has already earned Rs 375 crore net in India after its second weekend, putting it well within sights of the two-week figures of Baahubali 2 (Rs 390 crore) and Pathaan (Rs 459 crore). It also looks likely to become only the third film ever to cross Rs 500 crore in Hindi, again after Pathaan (Rs 525 crore), and Baahubali 2 ( Rs 511 crore). If Gadar 2 sustains this week, it has a good shot at overtaking both these figures by the end of its run.

Will Gadar 2 match the worldwide gross of Pathaan and Baahubali 2?

The simple answer is no. It is almost impossible for Gadar 2 to even touch Rs 1000 crore worldwide, let alone challenge the numbers done by Pathaan and Baahubali 2. Despite its record-breaking run in India, Gadar 2 has not done well overseas, earning only Rs 38 crore in the overseas markets. In comparison, Pathaan had earned Rs 392 crore overseas. Baahubali 2, on the other hand, had the pan-India appeal. While Gadar 2 has only released in Hindi, the Rajamouli film did business in Telugu (Rs 338 crore), Tamil (Rs 126 crore), and Malayalam (Rs 55 crore) as well. And it also did a business of Rs 371 crore overseas. Even if Gadar 2 manages to beat the two films domestically, it is unlikely to go anywhere beyond Rs 700 crore, much below the marks set by Pathaan (Rs 1050 crore) and Baahubali 2 (Rs 1788 crore).
