In the ’60s, the celebrity wife resembled Sharmila Tagore. This Bengal tigress, who was spunky, spirited and articulate, was married to Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, one of the finest Indian skippers. And of course, the celebrated cricketer and the Nawab of Pataudi also had his low points in batting. In fact, there was one phase, where he got out on single-digit scores. And who better than the actress to point this out to the world! The story goes — Sharmila called the stadium where the match was being played. Remember, it was before mobile phones came into existence. And when a helpful voice told her that Mansoor had just stepped onto the field to bat, Rinku (as she was called), quipped, ‘I will hold on.’ What she meant was that her husband would be off the crease soon enough and would be able to take her call!

Then there is Jaya Bachchan, who is also known to be Amitabh Bachchan’s harshest critic. So often, Amitabh has said to us, “I can get the best criticism from my wife at home. If Jaya doesn’t approve of a film of mine or a performance, she will say it absolutely like it is.”

There have been a few other celebrity biwis who have held their own and not become shadows of their famous husbands. In recent times, one of them, who has been fairly vocal about ‘the man of the house’ is Twinkle Khanna. Tina (as her hubby Akshay Kumar calls her) doesn’t suffer fools and if Akki does something foolhardy, she doesn’t suffer him, too.

However, for all the self-respecting wives or should we say, the more vociferous ones, there are an equal number of ladies, who are just happy to be their spouses’ glorified cheerleaders. Nothing wrong with this, you may say. In a country, where pati is still parmeshwar, the more subdued the wife, better the chances of her survival.

Unlike the normal man, who usually wants only subservience from his partner, celeb husbands want a bit of sycophancy, too.

In the past, you have had wives like Poonam S Sinha who for a long time wore SS in her nose pin to tell the world that her husband Shatrughan Sinha was hers alone. Propriety rights were made clear to all those who found SS attractive and back in the day, Shotgun was popular with the opposite sex.

Today, you have achievers like Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma, who also choose to be their respective hubbies’ enthusiastic and vocal supporters. Post Simmba, where Ranveer Singh struck gold, he put up a social media post, in which his biwi, Deepika, is seen raising a toast and saying, “Ae, aaya Police,” imitating the background notes of RS’s latest film. The Padmaavat actor captioned it as ‘My Cheerleader’ tagging his better half and posting several emoticons. Of course, it is to be taken in jest, but it is also something to make a note of. The tendency to toe the line is interesting.

Then you have the post put up by an emancipated Anushka, who seems to have taken inspiration from Anand Bakshi’s lyrics — Chanda Hai Tu, Mera Sooraj Hai Tu — from Aradhana (1969) to share her admiration for Virat Kohli. Last year during Karva Chauth, the actress posted their picture on her social media handle and captioned it as ‘My moon, my sun, my star, my everything Happy karva chauth to all’ (sic).

Keeping these gorgeous women company is also the independent-thinking MP-actor- filmmaker-danseuse Hema Malini. On Dharmendra’s birthday, December 8, Hema was happy receiving messages on behalf of her pati. She thanked all his fans and well-wishers via her Twitter account and promised to pass on their wishes. She wrote, ‘Happy Birthday to my everlasting love, the dearest father to my darling girls & proud grandfather to Darien & Radhya. I thank all the numerous fans who are sending their greetings to me on Dharamji’s birthday & I will definitely convey their wishes to him’ (sic).

This sometimes a diva, sometimes just a doting patni thing is also welcome. After all, miyan biwi raazi, toh kya karega kaazi!
