Deepika Padukone's stand over JNU violence linked to Padmaavat; 'hope it doesn't become new normal', she says

Deepika Padukone stood in solidarity with students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Tuesday night. This reportedly unplanned move had left the Twitterati divided. While many Twitterati urged that because of her association with 'Tukde Tukde Gang', her movie Chhapaak should be banned. Some others came out in support of the actress too.

Deepika now came out and gave an interview to Aaj Tak. In this interview, Deepika stated that her message was the same even two years back when Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat sets were vandalized and people were hurt. The movie also starred her now-husband Ranveer Singh and actor Shahid Kapoor in lead roles along with Aditi Rao Hydari and Raza Murad in pivotal roles.

Talking to Aaj Tak, Deepika cleared her stand saying, "What I wanted to say I said it two years ago when Padmaavat was released. What I am seeing today, it pains me. I hope it doesn’t become the new normal. That anyone can say anything and they can get away with it. I fear and I'm sad. This is not the foundation of our country."

When asked about the JNU violence in particular, Deepika added, "I am very angry at what is happening but it is worse that no action is being taken."

Apart from Deepika, even Varun Dhawan spoke about the JNU violence and stated 'we cannot stay neutral on such an issue'. "You have to condemn such attacks. It is dangerous and sad if masked people enter an educational institution and all this (assault, vandalism) happens," he said.
