Renowned author and Sahitya Akademi Award winner, Nilotpal Mrinal has alleged copyright infringement by streaming platform, The Viral Fever-TVF.

In a long Facebook post in Hindi, Nilotpal Mrinal has claimed that TVF’s latest web series ‘Aspirants’ is based on his 2015 book ‘Dark Horse’. Created by Arunabh Kumar, the web series follows the lives of UPSC aspirants staying at Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar.

In his post, Nilotpal talks about how he met TVF’s Arunabh Kumar and suggested that a movie or a web series could be made based on his book ‘Dark Horse’. He even wrote that the meeting went well.

Nilotpal further says that theoretically, 30 percent of ‘Aspirants’ is based on his book, but that was not a concern for the people sitting in Mumbai.

Originally in Hindi, Nilotpal’s post roughly translates to, “Everyone must have thought 'writers like Nilotpal come and go everyday. Recently Satya Vyas’s ‘Banaras Talkies’ was also stolen, what could these people do'?”

In his post, Nilotpal has announced that he will take the matter to court.

“This fight will be fought by the writer of ‘Dark horse’, if lost it will be the loss of ‘Dark Horse’s’ writer, but if won, it will be a win for every struggling writer whose stolen stories have turned into hit ‘films/web series’”

Nilotpal then gives a comprehensive account of how TVF’s ‘Aspirants’ is based on ‘Dark Horse’ and that he hasn’t been given due credit for it. Mrinal says that he has arrived to this conclusion only after watching the web series.

“Our claims are based on discussion with the law and copyright specialists,” wrote Nilotpal.

Along with the post, Nilotpal also shared a picture of Arunabh Kumar and in a postscript note he said, “Have shared Anurabh’s photo and details of the meeting with him to prove that he knew me as the writer of ‘Dark Horse’ and was also aware of my interests to make a film based on the book.

The five-episode series, 'Aspirants’ came to an end on May 8. The show stars Naveen Kasturia, Shivankit Singh Parihar, Abhilash Thapliyal, Namita Dubey and Sunny Hinduja, among others.
