And, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall! On November 8, Humpty (Aamir Khan) and Dumpty (Amitabh Bachchan) sat on a high wall. Their Diwali offering, Thugs Of Hindostan (TOH), which cost Rs 300 cr to make, market and promote, opened to Rs 49 cr (Hindi version), an unheard of first-day figure for Bollywood. The producers, Yash Raj Films, sent out an official press release that said: “TOH collects Rs 52.25 crore (Rs 50.75 cr from Hindi and Rs 1.50 from Tamil-Telugu versions) on the first day, Aamir-Bachchan create 7 massive box-office records!”

DIRECTOR’S TAKE

Director Vijay Krishna Acharya (better known as Viktor) gave out lofty statements saying, “TOH is the quintessential Hindi movie that we love to watch with our friends and families. We were lucky to get two of the biggest stars of our generation to come together for an out-and-out masala Diwali entertainer. We are humbled and ecstatic with the love and appreciation that audiences have showered on Thugs to help the film create box-office history on day one. We are thrilled to see that audiences across age groups, across India, are loving TOH and have made our film a part of their Diwali plans. We made Thugs with a vision to provide a pure festive entertainer for the entire family and this result is extremely gratifying for all of us at YRF.”

THE HIGHEST OPENER, BUT...

So, while it is true that TOH will go down in Bollywood history as a record-breaker for its mammoth opening, it’s also true that this action-adventure got panned so much for its mediocre content and poor storytelling ability that on day two, the collections dropped drastically, to about Rs 28.25 cr (Hindi). The production house gave the figures of Rs 29.25 cr (which includes Rs 1 cr from Tamil-Telugu versions).

Well, all the king’s horses (ridden by Viktor) and all the king’s men (the exhibitors who helped in the carpet-bombing with about 5,000 screens across India) couldn’t put the Thugs together again.
