Akshay Kumar comes to rescue after wife Twinkle Khanna’s tweet; funds installation of bio-toilets at Juhu beach

It was in August last year that actor-turned-author Twinkle Khanna got slammed for tweeting how she found people defecating in the open during her morning walks. In her tweet, she wrote, “Good morning and I guess here is the first scene of Toilet Ek Prem Katha part 2 #WhenYourWalkGoesDownTheToilet” 

While her tweet went viral, she was trolled for being insensitive towards slum-dwellers who have no access to public loos and thus, use the beach as a toilet. Soon after, Twinkle gave a clarification that a public toilet was located just minutes away. Now months after the said issue, Akshay has jumped to Twinkle’s rescue and a row of bio-toilets sponsered by him were recently opened for public use on Juhu beach.

As per a report in The Times of India. the BMC on Monday said while the toilets funded by Akshay will partly solve the problem, three or four more such toilets will have to be installed to make Juhu and Versova beaches free from open defecation.

The report further suggests that Akshay teamed up with Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray and spent around Rs 10 lakh for installing the bio-toilets. “The toilets have bio-digester so there will be no stink. The toilets will bring a lot of relief to not just the local slum dwellers, but also to visitors,” said Assistant Municipal Commissioner, K-West ward, Prashant Gaikwad. 

Meanwhile, last year, the BMC  launched a campaign to eradicate open defecation but the problem open defecation persisted in Mumbai. According to the data available with the municipal corporation, there were 117 major open defecation spots in the city but the BMC claims that these open defecation spots have been dealt with.

Well, we applaud Akshay that after dealing with the problem of open defecation in his movie titled Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, he is addressing the issue in real life too.
