Last July, Ajay Devgn announced his plans of making Taanaji: The Unsung Warrior with a photoshoot. To be helmed by Om Raut (director of Lokmanya: Ek Yug Purush, a biopic on freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak), the film is about Tanaji Malusare, a general in the army of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who sacrificed his life to recapture the fort of Kondhana from the Mughals in the historic Battle of Sinhagad, 1670.

Back then, the actor had two other production houses as partners and a studio conglomerate backing the period drama. Though things didn’t work out with his associates, Ajay is not making any compromises to realise his dream project. We hear, he is so passionate about the subject that he has taken over the production reins himself and will launch it on a larger canvas with a 3D version, too. Sources say that his own VFX company, rated as one of the best in the industry, will be brought on board for it.

Apparently, he’s also tied up with another presenter after parting ways with the studio over a couple of issues. However, the conglomerate and the actor continue to share a warm relationship.

An industry insider tells us that pre-production work is in full swing. Our source says, “Work has begun on creating the sets and shooting is scheduled to start in the next few months. Someone hinted it will begin in mid-September.” The film is scheduled to release next year.

Incidentally, during the promotional tour of Raid, Ajay had reportedly said that he didn’t believe in locking a release date much in advance. He stated that it usually adds to the pressure of completing the project in time and, in turn, could corner filmmakers into compromising with their vision and subject. And in the case of Taanaji, Ajay wants no compromise.

BOLLYWOOD BETS BIG ON 3D

Though not entirely a new technology in India, 3D is known to enhance the cinematic experience in keeping with the larger-than-life subject and action in a movie and is fast catching up in Bollywood. In recent times, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and Padmaavat have proven that with high-scale content, 3D can make film-viewing a memorable experience, besides raking in the moolah at the box office.

Remo D’souza, who’s making a dance film with Varun Dhawan and Katrina Kaif, has opted for 3D, making it his second outing with this technology after the success of ABCD 2 in 2015.

What’s more, Sajid Nadiadwala, too, has decided to add this new dimension to his next, Housefull 4, which is about reincarnation, with one part of the story set in the bygone era and shot in Baahubali-like scale and action. The 3D film has reportedly landed a lucrative deal months before it goes on floors.
