Deepika Padukone is now a married woman but unlike her contemporaries Sonam K Ahuja and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, she has not changed her surname. In fact, she had jokingly mentioned that Ranveer Singh would take her surname. It looks like the husband took her advice a bit too seriously, since he is actually ready to change his surname.

On a chat show, the actor was quizzed about it, where he said, “Since I have dropped my surname, I need a new one, so why not! It’s a legendary surname.” For the uninitiated, Ranveer has dropped his surname Bhavnani so that he can be called Ranveer Singh. That is the reason why he is ready to take up the surname Padukone as his last name. The actor is also fond of ace badminton player Prakash Padukone, who also happens to be Deepika's father.

Deepika had previously shunned all such reports, telling Hindustan Times, “It (the surname changing)’s not true. In fact, after that interview I realised that it’s a conversation Ranveer and I’ve never even had. So, we haven’t been like, ‘oh, do you think you should change your surname?’ That [chat about it in an interview] was, of course, a candid joke of sorts. It has never crossed either of our minds. When I was asked about it, I was like, ‘oh, we haven’t even thought about it’.”

She justified it by adding, “Maybe because it’s not important. Also, I’ve worked extremely hard to create my own identity and so has he. So, my question is, ‘why would he have to do that?’ I think what people see of us is a very minuscule part of our entire being and existence. But at the core of it, we are very alike.”
