Music buffs will recall this Lata Mangeshkar-Kishore Kumar duet composed by RD Burman as one of the most romantic melodies of the 1980s. This was the song Sanjay sang to his then-girlfriend Tina Munim, who played the romantic lead opposite him in Rocky.

While the ultra-romantic track’s inclusion in the film is indeed welcome, what comes as surprise is the context in which it will be used in the new film. Says a source, “Kya Yehi Pyar Hai won’t be about romantic love, but the love for life. The female voice has been completely eliminated and will only have singer Armaan Malik crooning about the love for life as Sanjay Dutt (Ranbir in the movie) goes from one crisis to another. The song will play like a theme track throughout the film.”

Amaal Malik, who has been given the task of remixing the song, says, “Yes, I am doing a new version of Kya Yehi Pyar Hai. But what a huge responsibility this is. This RD Burman song is the baap of romantic duets. To recreate that kind of composition and to get the voice quality of Kishore Kumarji is so difficult. I am not much into remixes, but I had to do this one because a filmmaker like Raju Hirani asked me to and also because it’s a vintage RD number.”

Amaal is prompt to point out that he will be duly crediting Burman for the song. “Not for a moment am I going to claim credit for it. I see many reprised versions where the guy doing the remix talks of the song as though it is his original. That’s a shame.”
