Independence Day 2020: From 'Sholay' to 'Ek Tha Tiger', hit Bollywood movies released on August 15 over the years

This year for the first time in many years, no film is being released during Independence Day weekend in theatres.

Independence Day weekend is huge at the theatres' ticket windows as huge Bollywood films slate to release. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, theatres are shut in the country and no films are releasing this year on and around August 15. This has happened for the first time in many years. Today, on the occasion of Independence Day 2020, we decided to list down Bollywood movies which released on August 15 over the years and became a hit at the box office.

One of the most iconic films includes Sholay which hit the screens in the year 1975 and has become one of the greatest films ever made in Indian cinema.

Siddharth Anand directorial Bachna Ae Haseeno released in 2008. The film starred Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Bipasha Basu and Minissha Lamba in the leading roles. It was one of the hits of that year.

Ek Tha Tiger released on Independence Day 2012 and was helmed by Kabir Khan. The film which is a part of the Tiger franchise starred Salman Khan in the titular role and Katrina Kaif as the female lead. The film also had a good supporting cast including late Girish Karnad, Ranvir Shorey and others.

Ek Tha Tiger broke many records and became the highest-grossing films that year.

Gold: The Dream That United Our Nation is a sports-based biographical film which was directed by Reema Kagti. The film is based on India's first national hockey team to the 1948 Summer Olympics and starred Akshay Kumar in the leading role. The movie also starred Mouni Roy (her Bollywood debut), Amit Sadh, Vineet Kumar Singh, Kunal Kapoor, Sunny Kaushal and Nikita Dutta.

A film of ensemble cast Mission Mangal is based on the scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) who contributed to the Mars Orbiter Mission, India's first interplanetary expedition. Directed by Jagan Shakti, the film starred Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha, Taapsee Pannu, Nithya Menen, Kirti Kulhari, Sharman Joshi, H. G. Dattatreya and Vikram Gokhale in the lead roles.

2018 release Satyameva Jayate directed by Milap Zaveri starred John Abraham and Manoj Bajpayee in the lead roles. The film's sequel is underway.

One of the most iconic movies of all time Sholay released in the year 1975 on Independence Day. The film is unforgettable and still becomes a reference point for many Bollywood fans. Having an incredible star cast including Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan and many others, Sholay was helmed by Ramesh Sippy.

Sequel to 2011 release Singham, Singham Returns hit the screens on Independence Day 2014. The film had Ajay Devgn reprising the role of Bajirao Singham and Rohit Shetty donned the director's hat once again. However, the female lead was played by Kareena Kapoor Khan. 

One of the most popular films of Salman Khan, Tere Naam released on August 15, 2003. The Satish Kaushik directorial which was the Hindi remake of Tamil film Sethu starred Salman Khan in the leading role and had Bhumika Chawla paired opposite him.
