She truly deserved this award. It's so unfortunate that she is not here with us today to celebrate. I am grateful to the government of India, the I&B Ministry and the jury. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India's highest honour in the field of cinema. It is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals, an organisation set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. As of 2016, the award comprises a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl, and a cash prize of Rs 1,000,000. In an acting career spanning for over four decades, Vinod Khanna, who died in April last year, starred in popular films like 'Mere Apne', 'Mera Gaon Mera Desh', 'Kuchhe Dhaage', 'Gaddaar', 'Imtihaan', 'Muqaddar Ka Sikandar', 'Inkaar', 'Amar Akbar Anthony', 'Rajput', 'The Burning Train', 'Qurbani', 'Kudrat', 'Parvarish', and 'Jurm'. Majority of the National Award winners were left disappointed and disheartened on knowing that they won't be receiving the award at the hands of the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind. They were informed at the rehearsals for the award ceremony, that the President will only present the award to 11 out of the 137 winners, Reportedly, about 60 awardees skipped the award ceremony in protest.
