[In Pics] Box Office Half-Yearly Report 2018: Padmaavat, Sanju, Dhadak triumph

Karan Johar and Shashank Khaitan's Sairat remake, Dhadak has already become a box office sensation. In just two weeks, the Ishaan Khatter-Janhvi Kapoor starrer has acquired a total worldwide gross of nearly Rs 93 crore.

R. Balki's Pad Man, starring Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte, represented a shift in the traditional Bollywood biopics of sports stars and film legends. The movie gave us realness and honesty, and wasn't unwelcome considering the whole sanitary pad-GST issue (thank God that's over with now). Overall, the film pulled in a total worldwide gross of nearly Rs 120 crore.

Shashanka Ghosh's Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants style film Veere Di Wedding, starring Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania, gave audiences worldwide a funny and relatable film that they didn't mind making one of the highest grossing female-led Bollywood movies ever, with a total worldwide gross of close to Rs 139 crore.

Ajay Devgn's Raid, also starring Ileana D'Cruz and Saurabh Shukla, kind of flew under the radar without acquiring the lasting fan base that other Ajay Devgn super-hits have. Nevertheless, it did receive positive reviews and earned a spot on this list, with a good Rs 143 crore.

It may not have earned the canon fame that Pyaar Ka Punchnama and its sequel did, but Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety did pretty well with audiences worldwide, grossing more than Rs 148 crore, and earning the title of 'hardest to pronounce Bollywood film title of 2018'

Raazi emerged as one of the year's critical darlings, and proved to be another tour de force for Alia Bhatt. It also brought to our glorious attention the quietly dashing Vicky Kaushal (who will appear later on this list once more), and managed to earn for itself a total worldwide gross of Rs 194 crore.

Baaghi 2 took an already successful film and managed to mint major bucks with it. While it may not have been a favourite of the critics, audiences worldwide ate it up, giving it a total worldwide gross of well over Rs 250 crore.

Race 3 is one film that continues to polarise. On the one hand, people enjoyed the addition of Salman Khan to their favourite franchise. On the other, people (mostly critics) missed Saif Ali Khan's presence, and felt that the franchise had run its course. Regardless, the overall appeal of the Race franchise worked well enough to give this film a total worldwide gross of more than Rs 303 crore.

Now this is where we enter the big leagues. Sanju has already blasted past most of its competition, quickly becoming the fourth highest grossing Bollywood film of all time in India. While its subject matter attracted major controversy and attention, no one can deny the legacy the film has quickly established. Plus, we were all gifted with the immensely enjoyable performances of Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal (we told you he would come back). Sanju has amassed over Rs 579 crore at the box office so far.

And again, standing supreme at the top, the reigning queen of Bollywood, Padmaavat. It makes sense that the film that attracted the maximum controversy and the maximum headlines would also attract the maximum money. It took a long, long time for the Deepika Padukone-Ranveer Singh-Shahid Kapoor novelty to wear off. While Sanju hot on its heels, at this point, Padmaavat is the highest grossing Bollywood film of 2018, with a whopping Rs 586 crore earned.
