Bell bottoms and flare-up pants have been in vogue for almost two years now. No prizes for guessing it’s a style reminiscent of ’70s. But that’s not where the buck stops. A look at the celebs’ style file in recent times reveals that the fashion from the era is back and how!
From patterns to prints, cuts and accessories, trends of that decade are making it to the style lexicon more than ever before.

1. That ’70s look

Three ladies who most recently reminded us of all things seventies were Deepika Padukone, Taapsee Pannu and Sobhita Dhulipala. While the Padmaavat actress attended the Dior Spring 2020 presentation in a floral dress and hairband, Shobhita Dhulipala’s Hilfiger Collection suit by Tommy Hilfiger with checkered trousers and a jacket in the same pattern was on point. Not to be outdone was Taapsee Pannu at the promotions of her upcoming movie, where she turned up in a
floral shirt, bell bottoms, floral earrings and red chunky sunglasses completing the look that was a perfect return to the ’70s.

Apart from them, one element or the other has made its presence felt with great regularity.

2. Balloon Sleeves

On the same evening as Alia, Sonam K Ahuja donned a printed green Masaba floral sari, but what stood out was the blouse. It had balloon sleeves, which was a mainstay feature when it came to tops and dresses back in the day.

A day prior, Priyanka Chopra Jonas’s Oscar De La Renta dress also had the same kind of sleeves.  This was after she wore a floral dress with the same sleeve
detailing.

3. Polka prints

Chakshu Makrani of Chakshu Couture quotes the return of the polka print as one of the greatest tellers of the retro fashion being back with a vengeance. “Also called the Bobby print, popularised by Dimple Kapadia in the movie by the same name, I see a lot of younger girls opting for it of late, like Sonam recently,” says she.

Ananya Panday, Shraddha Kapoor and Nora Fatehi are a few others.

4. Over-the-knee boots

Apart from gladiators and clogs, over-the-knee boots were de rigeur during the era. In recent times, Janhvi Kapoor, Shibani Dandekar, Gabriella
Demetriades and Aditi Rao Hydari have been spotted in this type of footwear one after the other.

5. Chunky sunglasses

Retro fashion has also found a way in accessories — especially eyewear. Chunky, often square, sunglasses, colourful lenses and thick frames are back. From Varun Dhawan to Kriti Sanon, Ranveer Singh to Arjun Kapoor, these goggles have been opted for by a number of celebs.

6. Go bold or go back

Chakshu attributes the re-emergence of the retro fashion to the fact that it’s all about being comfortable in one’s skin. “We have always leaned towards Bohemian style and all the bold colours, prints and accessories are back with a bang because it’s all about individual expression,” she explains. Designer AD Singh, too, agrees that it’s either go bold or go back. “Bolder prints, midis, short dresses, trains, drape-like falls are all so in right now and they are all so typically ,70s,” he points out. He observes that fashion is always recycled. “Even if one calls it innovation and evolution, a little bit of modernity is added and given a twist. And the only way to recycle fashion is to go bold or go back,” he states.

7. Bell bottoms and overalls

Actresses who have opted for wide-legged pants and bell bottoms of late is an exhaustive list — whether it was Kareena Kapoor Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Ananya Panday or Janhvi Kapoor. Then, the number of women in overalls (most of them in denims) is another trend one may get tired of counting. Malaika Arora in dungarees with a white bra top, Bhumi Pednekar’s jumpsuit, Twinkle Khanna’s boiler suit, Deepika, Amrita Rao among many other have slayed with their style.

8. The front knot

Alia Bhatt is all things hippie in the yellow number she rocked. The actress opted for a Jonathan Simkhai gingham outfit that had a front knot, bright colour and long length — all a nod to the ’70s. A couple of days before her, Kriti Kharbanda sported a purple top that she knotted in the front teamed with a ruffled skirt in the same colour. Tonal dressing was another style staple of the time, anyway.
