Movies are hitting milestones and we’re getting older (it’s all going by so fast). A lot of films are hitting big numbers in terms of years since their release. The most recent one to do that is the Karan Johar romantic drama, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, which hits 12 years today. The film was released on August 11, 2006.

One of the highest grossing films of the year, KANK polarised critics across India, who didn’t appreciate the film’s take on a subject as delicate as extra-marital affairs and adultery. However, internationally, the film was a critical and commercial success, and is one of the highest grossing Bollywood movies internationally. The film’s star cast, including Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, have remembered the film fondly. So, to celebrate 12 years since our favourite tear-jerking cult classic, here are some pictures and facts from behind-the-scenes that might make you a tab bit emotional. Just a bit.

KANK is one of those films that you can’t help but cry to, another Kal Ho Na Ho, if you will. One common link between those two films is Preity Zinta, who posted this throwback picture with the caption, “Remembering KANK today - the film that broke my heart and my marriage on film. It had some of the best written scenes! A film ahead of its times that showed the different dynamics of marriage!”

2. A different kind of love story

Farah Khan joined in the fun and posted this hilarious throwback picture of her and Karan trying to recreate Shah Rukh and Rani’s pose in the midst of the fall weather with the caption, “Mother of all throwbacks!! what were we doing?? #kank shoot.. thank god didn’t make srk n rani do this in the song...karan johar to many more crazy shoots.”

3. Rishi Talwar

Amitabh Bachchan also posted a behind-the-scenes picture of his son, Abhishek, with Preity prepping for a dance scene. Originally, Ajay Devgn was offered the role of Rishi Talwar, but the role ultimately went to Abhishek Bachchan, which seems pretty fitting.

4. Dev Saran’s son or daughter?

The internet went into overdrive a while ago when people started realising that Shah Rukh’s son, Arjun, in the movie was played by a girl. Actress Ahsaas Channa played the role perfectly, and played a boy once again in My Friend Ganesha.

5. Shah Rukh Khan, the director

For the hotel scene where Shah Rukh and Rani finally sleep together, Karan asked Shah Rukh to direct the scene as he was busy elsewhere. Shah Rukh felt uncomfortable doing it, and instead called up Amitabh Bachchan to direct the scene over the phone.

6. Real-life inspiration

Karan Johar got the idea behind the film when he saw a real couple in London break up on amicable terms. The break-up made him want to explore deeper dynamics of marriage and relationships, which is where he came up with the whole adultery plot.

7. Promotional clothing?

One of the various promotional tools that the makers of the film came up with was the use of a T-shirt with witty quotes and logos on them to reference the film. One such shirt, for example, read ‘Married or happy?’.
