Actress Bhumi Pednekar has been making headlines of late for her horror thriller film 'Durgamati', the Hindi remake of Telugu-Tamil movie 'Bhaagamathie' starring Anushka Shetty.

In the film, Bhumi dons a never seen before avatar and it for this that the actress has been receiving a lot of praise from netizens and fellow industry members.

Meanwhile, speaking about the casting of the film, in an exclusive interview to Pinkvilla, director G Ashok recently revealed that Bhumi Pednekar wasn't the first choice for the film.

Disclosing that he and the makers did think of other names besides Bhumi's, Ashok said that they ultimately finalised the 'Dum Laga Ke Haisha' star because 'she is a performance-based actor'.

'She isn’t the actress who works on glamour, she is a performance-based actor. This character needs performance as it has different layers, aggressiveness, pain… she has expressed it all perfectly. In all choice, she was the right choice," said G Ashok to Pinkvilla in an interview.

Adding to that, Ashok said that besides her acting prowess, Bhumi also made sure she did all her homework and ensured she isn't aping Anushka (Shetty).

Ashok said, "Bhumi has already been doing different roles be it Dum Laga Ke Haisha, Saand Ki Aankh, etc. This time, she also tried a different role and she did her proper homework for the same. She was well prepared and gave her best performance. She gave a fabulous output. She didn’t want to repeat the elements of the original movie, she tried not to repeat Anushka. She worked hard and prepared herself well for the character. After a point, you will see Bhumi taking over the entire movie. She is a superb artist."

Meanwhile, in an exclusive chat with DNA, Bhumi's Durgamati co-star Karan Kapadia was all praise for the 'Toilet: Ek Prem Katha' star. He said,  "Bhumi and I actually became great friends. She was already shooting for the film in Bhopal when I got there for my schedule. I went to the set to meet Ashok sir (director of Durgamati) and she was already shooting, she had a break, she came, she sat down with me and we had a conversation. I think we both knew from thereon that we have a lot in common, and we're gonna be good friends. But I don't think either of us expected us to get along this well. It's a great thing because that translates on-screen and that sort of comes across in our chemistry whether we're in the song or whether we're doing scenes together. It just became more sort of easy and organic and flowy when we were on set because we had this great camaraderie off-camera."
