The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has decided to take the help of a branch of Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) to prepare a masterplan to develop the city by the year 2035.
BDA town planner member BM Tirakanagoudar said they were preparing Revised Masterplan (RMP) 2035 for the city. For the purpose, he said, they have approached National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC)—a Hyderabad-based branch of Isro—to provide images of the city to help prepare the masterplan. The images received from the NRSC will be given to the agency that qualifies in the tender.

Through remote sensing, the NRSC provides earth-observation data for urban development. An Isro official confirmed that the BDA had approached them regarding the masterplan. The official said Isro’s Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellites can do the job for the BDA. The official said Isro has provided satellite images to the BDA earlier and would do it this time as well.

The information provided by IRS satellites can be used in several fields like agriculture, environment, forestry, water resources, urban development, surveying for minerals, drought, flood forecasting, ocean resources and disaster management.
The Cartosat and Resourcesat satellites of the IRS satellite system are among the most advanced satellites, which have the potential of providing imagery for the BDA. In the past, the NRSC has provided high-resolution remote sensing data to civic agencies.

Tirakanagoudar said the work on preparing RMP 2035 was only in its initial stages. He said the BDA would entrust the work to a private agency by calling a tender. He said nine agencies had already shown interest in the project. He said the BDA had sought request for proposal and the private agencies had sent their draft plans. He said the BDA would call a pre-bid meeting and would call for tender only after the request for proposal was finalised.

Further, Tirakanagoudar said the BDA would study the drawbacks of revised masterplan 2015 and make efforts to rectify them. He said the BDA would collect data from other government agencies as well and study the development activities they had undertaken. After the agency that qualifies in the tender submits its draft report, the BDA will set up a committee to verify the details, after which a final report would be formed.

That is not all. Tirakanagoudar said the BDA was seeking suggestions for RMP 2035 from the general public too. Two people have already given their suggestions.
