The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Karnataka, will now  use geographical information system (GIS) to map about 74,000 government schools in the state.

The SSA will acquire geographical coordinates of all the schools including lower primary, upper primary, secondary schools and junior colleges/PU colleges.

Implemented by the SSA Samithi, the project is funded by the Union ministry of human resource development  and the government of Karnataka on a ratio of 65:35. The project also includes a web-based application for accessing the district information system of schools education (DISE) database and the integrated database of schools.

According to an SSA source, the project includes collecting the names and addresses of each government-aided and unaided school and DISE code in each education district from the state project office. It also includes visiting the schools and capturing the geographical coordinates using GPS in a predetermined format.

The agency, which takes up the project, will capture a minimum 10 photographs of every school that covers the school building and any other infrastructure present within the premises. Each photograph shall capture the correct description of the particular school and shall have the date of visit.
Systematic upload of the geographical coordinates of every school along with the photographs using a special online data entry tool provided by the purchaser will be done on the SSA website.

A team of authorised experts and officials from the agencies will conduct quality checks regularly to monitor the progress of work at different stages.
Sources said that three years ago, there were discussions to take up the project. But due to some technical problems, the project was shelved. A similar project was completed in Andhra Pradesh where all the Anganawadi kendras were mapped in the GIS. The only other state which has done the GIS of schools is Gujarat.
