BANGALORE
Is your house inundated because it’s in a low-lying area? If so, it’s your fault and not govt’s, says Bangalore in-charge minister R Ashok.
Yes minister, we’re to blame! That’s as meek a response as you can get from citizens every time there is a civic crisis in the city highlighting the systemic failure of the state government, but citizens are blamed for it; especially like Friday’s rain fury which flooded the city, making life of those living in low-lying areas a living hell.
Transport and home minister R Ashok, also the Bangalore in-charge minister, on Saturday completely washed his hands of the flooding problems in the low-lying areas, and squarely blamed the civic miseries on the residents themselves.
In a shocking statement, unbecoming of a minister, Ashok said while visiting the low-lying areas flooded by heavy Friday evening rains, “Neither Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) nor the state government is responsible for such problems (flooding in low-lying areas). Residents should make arrangements to remove the water whenever such structures are flooded.”
The statement by the minister was made while inspecting Green Field Apartments on Rhenius Street in Shantinagar, opposite Akkithimmanahalli Hockey stadium.
“During the rains, a lot of underground parking places will be inundated. This has happened due to overflow of a stormwater drain nearby. The residents should make arrangements to pump out water by themselves. The palike cannot pump water from each and every apartment which is flooded,” he said. Though he blamed the residents for taking up apartments in low-lying areas despite knowing that flooding would naturally take place in these areas during heavy rains, not a word came from him on why the civic agencies working under the aegis of the state government sanctioned the plans for the buildings to be built in these areas, in the first place.
If anything, Ashok’s statement appears to be a classic ministerial reaction of blaming people for the government’s failure to prevent civic miseries from being heaped upon citizens.
The statement particularly shows the minister in poor light because it is the civic bodies like BBMP which grant no-objection and occupation certificates to builders to clear the way for residents to move in and take possession of their flats. How, then, can a minister wash his, the state government’s and the civic bodies’, hands of the flooding problems faced by the hapless residents living in low-lying areas?
